Drawing II E-Portfolio

Artwork

Artist Statement

I am currently a sophomore attending Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS. I am working towards a Bachelors of Fine Arts with my emphasis in ceramics. I am also working towards a degree in Secondary Education; upon graduation I plan to get certified to teach K-12 art. My artistic style of pottery is primarily functional but I find my balance in my aesthetics by stepping out of that realm at times.

I was raised in the small town of Burden, KS where received my high school education. In middle school and high school, I was fortunate enough to have wonderful educators that allowed me to explore my creative side and helped me to develop my pottery skills. I attended Cowley County Community College for one year after graduation, where I continued to further my education in the arts. I would like to become an art educator because I want to be able to make a difference in the lives of students just like my past teachers have done. Art is a wonderful creative outlet for children and young adults and if often times a form of therapy. I want to actively engage and inspire my students to develop personal technique and better themselves as individuals.

Like most artists, my artistic influences and style has changed throughout the years. I am currently working on exploring the realm of crystalline glazes here at FHSU. I work primarily as a functional potter using a porcelain body. My work is often defined as refined and well crafted. I work on the pottery wheel, throwing symmetrical pieces which I occasionally alter. My forms are frequently inspired by nature and the contours and textures I see around me. I have also worked this year in combining my drawing and my ceramics works. I am continually working to expand my knowledge of clay bodies, glazes, and firing techniques as much as possible.

When I first started working on the pottery wheel I used it as a therapeutic device. As my skills and techniques have strengthened, I have become more conscious of the relationship between my work and the viewer. I have begun to actually market and sell my work. My hope is that when people look at my work they are moved the beauty of the crystalline glaze or are intrigued by the uniqueness of the texture in the altered forms.
